Louisville Women Basketball Builds on Sweet 16 Success with Strong Returning Core and Promising Recruits
Jeff Walz retains four of five starters including ACC Sixth Player of the Year Imari Berry, while adding top-100 recruits to replace graduating seniors Laura Ziegler and Reyna Scott.

Louisville women basketball program continues building momentum following their Sweet 16 appearance, with head coach Jeff Walz maintaining significant continuity while adding talented newcomers to replace key departing players.

The Cardinals impressive 2025-26 campaign featured numerous program milestones, including their first 11-0 ACC start, a 14-game winning streak, an undefeated road record for the first time in program history, and an ACC Tournament championship game appearance that demonstrated their ascending trajectory.

Their regular season success translated into a third seed and host position for the NCAA Tournament, marking their first hosting opportunity since 2022. The sustained excellence positions Louisville favorably for continued growth in the competitive landscape of women college basketball.

I think it has been amazing to see how they are buying in to building the brand of Louisville, understanding all the people that come in front of them and before them, reflected departing senior forward Laura Ziegler. And then wanting to live up to their own legacy and build their own legacy, but they are a really good group. I am really happy that I got to play with them for one year.

Walz faces the challenge of replacing three significant contributors, with Ziegler and guard Reyna Scott graduating while junior guard Skylar Jones is no longer with the program. Ziegler, an All-ACC first-team selection, contributed 11.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, while Scott averaged 8.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals across her seven starts.

Despite these losses, Louisville retains substantial talent with four of their five starters returning alongside ACC Sixth Player of the Year Imari Berry. The continuity provides stability for a program that benefits from experienced leadership and established chemistry.

Taj Roberts, Elif Istanbulluoglu, and Berry represent the top three returning scorers, while Mackenly Randolph, Istanbulluoglu, and Berry lead returning rebounders. This core group provides the foundation for sustained competitiveness in ACC play.

Istanbulluoglu enters as the lone junior on the team, positioning her for expanded leadership responsibilities alongside the predominantly sophomore roster that contributed significantly to this season success. The youth and experience combination creates optimal conditions for continued development.

Freshman Grace Mbugua will be expected to assume greater responsibilities in the frontcourt following Ziegler departure, while second-year player Isla Juffermans should return after redshirting this season to provide additional depth and versatility.

Louisville signing of three players from the Class of 2026 addresses both immediate needs and long-term development goals. Four-star guards Ariyana Peanut Cradle and Myah Epps rank 38th and 68th respectively in the SportsCenter Next 100, bringing elite high school credentials to the program.

Epps, listed at 5-foot-10, concluded her prep career with impressive statistics including 14 points on 52 percent shooting, 4.1 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2.3 steals as a senior. Her 1,560 career points and 445 assists earned recognition on Indiana All Star team, demonstrating consistent productivity and leadership.

Cradle, also standing 5-10, averaged 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 2.6 assists as a junior at Westerville South High School in Ohio before transferring to SPIRE Academy for her senior season. Her combination of scoring and defensive production suggests immediate impact potential.

Louisville continues expanding its international presence with the addition of 6-4 forward Ayse Melek Demirer from Turkey. Her impressive statistics of 15.4 points, 17.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game for Turkey FIBA U16 Women EuroBasket Division B team demonstrate significant potential in the frontcourt.

The program maintains flexibility for additional roster improvements once the transfer portal opens on April 6, allowing Walz to address any remaining needs through experienced college players seeking new opportunities.

Much like this year, the Cardinals stand to benefit from continuity heading into next season, with almost half of the team being sophomores who gained valuable experience during their breakthrough campaign.

This foundation of returning talent combined with promising newcomers positions Louisville to build upon their Sweet 16 success while competing for ACC championships and deeper NCAA Tournament runs in the seasons ahead under Walz proven leadership.
