Pat Kelsey Goes Big: Louisville Lands Two Portal Stars in Stunning Weekend Coup
Louisville Cardinals head coach Pat Kelsey pulls off a remarkable transfer portal double, securing commitments from Kansas big man Flory Bidunga and Oregon guard Jackson Shelstad.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Pat Kelsey is not wasting any time reloading. In one of the most aggressive transfer portal weekends in recent college basketball memory, the Louisville Cardinals head coach landed two of the highest-rated players available, flipping Kansas center Flory Bidunga and Oregon point guard Jackson Shelstad in a coordinated recruitment that sent shockwaves through the sport.

ESPN Pete Thamel described it as a major package deal, with Louisville administration proving aggressive in laying out its championship vision to the two veterans. Both players were in attendance together at Louisville baseball game on Saturday, fueling speculation that was confirmed just days later.

Bidunga, a 98.49-rated prospect and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, was widely considered one of the most impactful big men in the country. His ability to protect the rim and dominate the glass makes him a transformational add for a Louisville team that finished 24-11 this season before a second-round NCAA Tournament exit.

Shelstad, rated 96.36, averaged 15.6 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game at Oregon before an injury cut his season short. The Oregonian was a consistent scoring threat and playmaker who should immediately step into the Cardinals starting lineup.

The timing of the commitments is particularly significant. With projected top-ten NBA Draft pick Mikel Brown Jr. expected to depart after a season-ending injury in March, Louisville faces a significant roster overhaul. Headlining that overhaul are now two players who chose Louisville over multiple high-profile suitors.

Field of 68 Jeff Goodman noted that the Cards entered the portal period armed with a huge budget for players and moved decisively. The early returns suggest the investment is already paying dividends.

But Kelsey is not done. According to On3, Louisville is expected to add up to eight more players this offseason and has turned its attention to Saint Marys forward Paulius Murauskas, a two-time All-WCC selection who averaged 18.4 points and 7.6 rebounds this season. The Cards are also among the programs monitoring BYU point guard Rob Wright, the number five overall player in the portal.

The transfer portal window continues to produce chaos across college basketball, but few programs have made a statement this week quite like Louisville. With Bidunga anchoring the interior and Shelstad running the offence, the Cardinals are positioning themselves as serious contenders in the ACC next season.
