Lorena Wiebes Wins Tour of Britain Opener as Riders Call for Safer Roads
Lorena Wiebes sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women in Cockermouth on Wednesday, on a day shaped by tributes to British cyclist Finlay Tarling and renewed concern about road-race safety. BBC Sport reported that 114 riders took the start after a photograph of Tarling was shown on a large screen and the crowd joined a minute’s applause.
Watch the highlights:
Tarling, 19, died the previous week after a high-speed collision with a van during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal. The vehicle had strayed onto the race route, according to the BBC report. His death has focused attention on traffic control at events that use rolling roadblocks, where police and officials travel ahead of and behind the peloton rather than closing every section for the entire day.
Wiebes, riding for SD Worx-Protime, said after her stage win that parents should not have to fear that their children will fail to return from a race. The Dutch rider, who has more than 100 career victories, said such an incident must not happen again and noted that fatal accidents have occurred too often.
British rider Hayley Simmonds also called for stronger oversight. She pointed to the 2023 Tour of the Pyrenees, where riders complained about vehicles approaching them on roads that were not fully closed. Several teams withdrew before cycling’s governing body, the UCI, cancelled the race. Simmonds said the sport needs collaboration between the UCI and race organizers, including evidence that road closures are legally enforceable and properly managed.
The Tour of Britain uses rolling road closures supported by marshalling and traffic-management teams. Jonathan Day, event director of British Cycling Ventures, said the organizers take safety extremely seriously and are supported by an experienced police central escort group. Former rider Hannah Barnes, a previous stage winner in the event, said she had never felt unsafe at the race and highlighted the work carried out behind the scenes.
This year’s Tour of Britain Women has five stages for the first time, matching the stage count of the men’s event. The race is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, August 23. Wiebes leaves Cockermouth with the opening-stage victory, while the wider discussion prompted by Tarling’s death is expected to remain central throughout the week.
