Lorena Wiebes Wins Tour of Britain Women Opener in Cumbria
Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the 2026 Tour of Britain Women on Wednesday, taking a closely contested sprint finish in Cockermouth. PA Media reported via The Guardian that the Dutch rider delivered the victory for Team SD Worx-Protime at the end of a 158.9-kilometre circuit through Cumbria.
Watch the highlights:
Italy’s Chiara Consonni crossed the line in second place, while Great Britain’s Josie Nelson completed the first three. Wiebes narrowly finished ahead of her rivals as the main group contested the stage victory, giving the 27-year-old the first win of this year’s race.
The stage had earlier been shaped by an attack from Arabella Blackburn and Audrey De Keersmaeker. Blackburn initiated the move with about 90 kilometres remaining, and the pair established an advantage that grew to nearly three minutes. Their effort put two riders clear during the long middle portion of the opening-day route.
Blackburn, an 18-year-old Scot and the youngest competitor in the race, then encountered an unusual setback when she was stung by a bee. Her challenge subsequently faded. Belgium’s De Keersmaeker continued ahead but was caught well before the finish, bringing the breakaway to an end and leaving the stage to be decided by the bunch.
Wiebes then converted the sprint opportunity, powering across the line ahead of Consonni and Nelson. The result followed her victories on the first two stages of the recent Tour de France Femmes, a run of results noted in the PA Media report. No finishing times or overall classification gaps were provided in the confirmed report of Wednesday’s stage.
The Tour of Britain Women continues on Thursday with stage two, which is scheduled to run between Clitheroe and Blackpool. After the opening circuit began and ended in Cockermouth, the next leg moves the race to a new start and finish as Wiebes carries the first-stage victory forward and the field resumes competition.
