London City Open WSL Season With 2-1 Win Over Manchester United

London City Lionesses opened their Women's Super League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at a sold-out Copperjax Community Stadium in Bromley on Friday. The Guardian reported that the hosts controlled 60 percent of possession and produced an assertive display against a United side beginning life under new manager Eva Olid.

The breakthrough arrived after nine minutes. Alanna Kennedy challenged for the ball under pressure in the penalty area, and Manchester United midfielder Julia Zigiotti Olme turned it into her own net. London City had pressed forward from the start, and the early goal rewarded their aggressive approach.

Alexia Putellas captained London City on her WSL debut following her move from Barcelona. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner delivered a steady midfield performance as London City began their second season in the division. Rosa Kafaji and Lucía Corrales were also prominent, although Corrales later left the field on a stretcher after overstretching for the ball.

London City extended their lead in the second half through Daniëlle van de Donk. A corner from Mapi León was worked to Delphine Cascarino, whose cross was redirected into the far corner by the Netherlands midfielder. Cascarino was named player of the match after helping the home side establish a two-goal advantage.

United created three shots but struggled to impose themselves for much of the contest. Simi Awujo scored deep into added time, driving in a loose ball after London City had cleared a free-kick into open space. The goal reduced the deficit but came too late to change the result.

London City manager Eder Maestre said Putellas brings leadership and high standards, while stressing that the team's collective connection was the most important feature of the win. He also explained that former England goalkeeper Mary Earps started on the bench after issues during pre-season, with Elene Lete selected in goal. Olid said United improved after half-time and described the team's development as a process. The result gives London City an immediate platform at the start of the new WSL season, while United face Chelsea and Arsenal in their next two matches.
