Liverpool sign Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans in deal worth up to £30m

Liverpool have completed the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Belgian club Genk in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £30 million. BBC Sport reported that the total includes add-ons, with an initial fee and further payments forming the package.

Brughmans has agreed a six-year contract with Liverpool, but his move to England will not take effect immediately. He will remain with Genk on loan for the rest of the current season and is scheduled to join Liverpool ahead of the 2027-28 campaign.

The 6-foot-7 goalkeeper has started each of Genk's first four matches this season. He has also represented Belgium at youth level, giving Liverpool a young international prospect who is already playing senior club football while continuing his development in familiar surroundings.

BBC Sport described the reported figure of about £30 million as the highest amount the deal can reach, rather than a guaranteed upfront payment. That distinction leaves the final value dependent on the structure of the follow-up payments and add-ons attached to the transfer.

Liverpool's current senior goalkeeping options are Alisson, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Vitezslav Jaros. Brughmans will therefore spend this campaign away from Anfield before entering that group as an option from the summer of 2027. BBC Sport also reported that Alisson's contract expires next summer, while Mamardashvili's future is uncertain.

The move was developed by Liverpool's global talent department, which is led by Matt Newberry, according to BBC Sport. The club has made several recent additions from outside England, including teenage centre-backs Mor Talla N'diaye of Senegal and Austria's Ifeanyi Ndukwe after their performances at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar. Goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and midfielder Samuel Martinez have also arrived during the past 12 months from Hungary and Colombia respectively, with Pecsi currently on loan at TSV Hartberg in Germany. Brughmans now joins that recruitment group while remaining at Genk until his planned arrival on Merseyside.
