Late Fernandez own goal earns Liverpool 2-2 draw with London City Lionesses
Liverpool rescued a 2-2 draw against London City Lionesses on Sunday when Jana Fernandez turned a cross into her own net in the second minute of stoppage time. The late equaliser at St Helens Stadium ended London City's four-match winning run in the Women's Super League, according to BBC Sport's match report.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors had overturned Beata Olsson's early penalty through goals from Freya Godfrey and Kadidiatou Diani, taking advantage of two Liverpool mistakes to lead 2-1 at half-time. Liverpool then applied sustained pressure after the break before Cornelia Kapocs delivered the cross that Fernandez diverted past goalkeeper Elene Lete. The result ended Liverpool's run of three defeats across all competitions.
Olsson put Liverpool ahead from the spot in the 19th minute after Mapi Leon fouled Jenna Clark inside the penalty area. London City had already threatened through Godfrey and Danielle van de Donk, and their response to falling behind took only three minutes. Godfrey dispossessed Khiara Keating as the Liverpool goalkeeper tried to play out, then finished into the unguarded net.
Diani completed the turnaround in the 44th minute following another defensive error. Alejandra Bernabe failed to make a header back towards Keating while under pressure from Van de Donk, who supplied the pass for Diani to score. That gave Eder Maestre's side the advantage at the interval despite Liverpool having opened the scoring.
Liverpool created further opportunities in the second half, with Lete saving a curling attempt from Natalia Ramos and Kapocs hitting the crossbar with a deep delivery. Their pressure finally produced the equaliser in added time. BBC match statistics recorded Liverpool with 60.9% possession, 15 shots and six efforts on target, compared with London City's 12 shots and four on target.
Liverpool manager Gareth Taylor said afterwards that his players had maintained their approach in difficult conditions, while acknowledging that the errors leading to the visitors' goals needed to be eliminated. London City scorer Godfrey expressed disappointment at both the timing and manner of the equaliser. Third-placed London City were left three points behind leaders Chelsea at the time of the report, while tenth-placed Liverpool remained without a league win in three matches.
