Olsson and Kapocs lift Liverpool to 2-0 Anfield derby win over Everton

Liverpool defeated Everton 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday, September 27, with Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs scoring in the Women's Super League derby. Olsson struck in the fourth minute and Kapocs added the second in the 86th, according to Sky Sports' match commentary. The Guardian reported it was Liverpool's first WSL victory over Everton at Anfield.

Natalia Ramos supplied the corner for Olsson's opening header, giving the hosts an early advantage they maintained through half-time. Olsson nearly scored again after half an hour, but Courtney Brosnan saved her header. Everton also created opportunities before the interval, with Hannah Cain shooting over and Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating stopping an effort from Ruby Mace in first-half stoppage time.

Liverpool continued to threaten after the break. Vivien Endemann hit the crossbar in the 51st minute after Jenna Clark headed the ball into her path, while Ramos had further attempts blocked. Everton remained within one goal until the closing stages, and Keating saved from substitute Holly McNamara in the 84th minute, shortly before Kapocs doubled the home side's lead.

Liverpool's official match report described another important intervention from Mace, who cleared off the line after Kapocs redirected Fuka Nagano's delivery towards goal with her shoulder. The eventual second goal came after Everton could not clear Alice Bergstrom's low cross. Kapocs reacted to the loose ball and finished on the turn, securing the result after the hosts had passed up several earlier chances.

Speaking to Liverpool's website afterwards, Olsson explained that the opening goal followed preparation with set-piece coach Jordan Kevan, who had identified the space to attack. She credited Ramos' delivery and said Liverpool had drawn confidence from their previous derby at Goodison Park, rather than concentrating on their Anfield record. Olsson also said the players wanted to keep pressing and attacking while ahead, instead of settling into a defensive approach.

The victory followed Liverpool's 4-2 midweek win over Sunderland in the Subway Players Cup, when Ramos scored her first goal for the club, according to an interview published by Liverpool before the derby. Gareth Taylor's side return to that competition on Wednesday, September 30, with an away match against Birmingham City at St Andrew's.
