Liverpool Draw Tottenham in EFL Cup Third Round

Liverpool will face Tottenham in the third round of the EFL Cup after the competition’s nine Premier League clubs involved in European football entered the draw. BBC Sport reported the pairing among 16 ties, with the round set to be staged across two separate weeks in September.

Manchester United were handed an all-Premier League meeting with Brighton. Holders Manchester City will play Norwich, while Arsenal travel to Ipswich and Aston Villa visit Coventry. The other confirmed ties involving top-flight clubs include Crystal Palace against Middlesbrough, Sunderland against Hull and Bournemouth against Lincoln.

Two places in the draw remained unresolved when it was published. Chelsea were due to host Luton on Thursday at 19:30 BST, with the winner scheduled to face Leeds in the third round. Fulham’s home tie against AFC Wimbledon, starting at 20:00 BST on Thursday, will determine which team travels to West Ham. Those Thursday matches are the final two second-round games needed to complete the field, so Leeds and West Ham know their possible opponents but not the final identities.

Fleetwood, identified by BBC Sport as the only fourth-tier club left in the competition, were drawn against Sheffield United. Millwall will face Newcastle, Everton will meet Wolves and Reading will play Brentford. The remaining matchups are Leyton Orient against Bradford and Peterborough against Barnsley.

The nine Premier League teams entering at this stage are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland. All nine are competing in Europe, which accounts for their entry in the third round rather than the earlier phase of the cup.

Matches will be divided between the weeks beginning Monday, September 7, and Monday, September 14. According to BBC Sport, that arrangement is designed to avoid clashes with the opening rounds of the Champions League and Europa League. Exact dates for the individual third-round ties were not included in the report, leaving the schedule to be allocated across those two windows.
