Live on Sky: Southampton Host Ipswich in Championship Survival Six-Pointer
Southampton and Ipswich Town prepare for a pivotal Championship encounter at St Mary's Stadium on Tuesday evening, with both clubs aware that three points could prove decisive in their respective battles against the drop.
The match, live on Sky Sports, sees Southampton currently sitting 21st in the Championship table, just two points above the relegation zone, while Ipswich occupy 22nd place and desperately need a positive result to keep their survival hopes alive with six games remaining.
Southampton's form has been inconsistent since their Premier League relegation last season, with Russell Martin's side winning only two of their last eight matches. However, they come into this fixture off the back of an encouraging 2-1 victory against Coventry City, which provided a much-needed confidence boost.
"This is a cup final for us," Southampton captain flynt stated. "We know what's at stake. The fans deserve to see us give everything for this club. We've had two good days on the training ground and we're ready."
Ipswich, who also suffered relegation from the Premier League alongside Southampton, have found life in the Championship equally challenging. Kieran McKennan's side has won just once in their last five away fixtures and enter this match having lost their previous two league games.
The tactical battle between the two managers could prove decisive. Southampton are expected to dominate possession given their technical style of play, while Ipswich will look to exploit spaces on the counter-attack through pacey wingers Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson.
The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 1-1 draw, with all three points potentially worth approximately £3 million in prize money and broadcasting revenue at this crucial stage of the campaign.
