Lions overturn half-time deficit to beat Ospreys 35-19 at Ellis Park
Lions came from 12-10 down at half-time to beat Ospreys 35-19 at Ellis Park on Saturday, scoring six tries in their United Rugby Championship victory. According to BBC Sport Wales, the Johannesburg side took control through their set piece after the interval and secured a four-try bonus point before the hour, leaving Ospreys without a bonus point from the match.
Watch the highlights:
Chris Smith supplied the only points of the opening quarter with a penalty. Ospreys passed up chances to kick for goal as they pursued a try, but Lions made the first breakthrough when Erich Cronje finished an attack launched from turnover possession in the 28th minute. Smith finished with one penalty and one conversion, with his missed kicks limiting the hosts' winning margin.
Ospreys recovered to take a narrow lead into the break. Keiran Williams scored after receiving an offload from centre partner Evardi Boshoff, with that move also beginning from turnover ball. The visitors then took advantage of Lions' indiscipline to create a line-out opportunity, and hooker Efan Daniel crossed from the resulting drive with the last play of the half.
The restart brought a reversal as Lions used their own driving line-out to regain the initiative. PJ Botha and replacement Morne Brandon scored before full-back Boeta Chamberlain added the bonus-point try in the 57th minute. Francke Horn provided the offload for Chamberlain's score, with the pass judged to have travelled flat. Those three tries turned Ospreys' interval advantage into a deficit they could not recover.
Ospreys fly-half Dan Edwards received a yellow card for a high tackle on the hour. Kelly Mpeku subsequently scored twice on the right wing as Lions extended their advantage. Replacement flanker Ross Moriarty crossed for Ospreys with the final play, ensuring the visitors registered a second-half score, but their three-try total left them short of a try bonus.
The result followed Lions' opening victory over Leinster. For Mark Jones' Ospreys, it completed a South African trip that began with a defeat by Sharks in Durban, where they had collected a four-try bonus point. Their next assignment is a Welsh derby against Dragons at Rodney Parade on Friday, 9 October, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 BST.
