Lions report positive preliminary signs as Jack Campbell remains in hospital
The Detroit Lions have reported positive preliminary signs in Jack Campbell's recovery after the linebacker suffered a neck injury during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. In a Monday update published on their website and reported by BBC Sport, the team said Campbell remained in a local hospital, where he was resting and recovering.
Watch the highlights:
Detroit did not disclose further medical details, saying it was respecting Campbell and his family's privacy. The statement offered an encouraging initial assessment but did not announce a hospital discharge or a timetable for a return to football. It followed the club's Sunday evening announcement that he would stay overnight for additional evaluation and monitoring.
Campbell was injured while tackling Minnesota tight end T.J. Hockenson on the first play of the fourth quarter. BBC Sport reported that he hit his head during the tackle and received medical attention while lying face down. Benjamin Raven's reporting, carried by Yahoo Sports, described a roughly 10-minute period of treatment before the linebacker was taken away on a medical cart.
Lions players gathered around Campbell as he was prepared to leave the field, according to the team's account. Head coach Dan Campbell said immediately after the game that he had no additional information and expressed concern for the linebacker and his family. Quarterback Jared Goff also spoke about the impact of seeing his teammate hurt, emphasizing Campbell's life as a husband and father while expressing hope for his recovery.
Detroit finished with a 19-15 victory over Minnesota, but the postgame reaction extended beyond the result. Raven reported that discussion in both locker rooms focused on Campbell's condition and the scene on the field. In a postgame interview, the Lions coach said the linebacker had been alert and breathing when he left, without offering a more detailed assessment at that stage.
The 26-year-old has been with Detroit since the Lions selected him 18th overall in the 2023 draft. He earned his first All-Pro selection last season and was voted a team captain this year, according to Raven. BBC Sport reported that Campbell signed an extension in May keeping him under contract through the 2030 season.
