Linfield beat Coleraine 3-0 to take Irish Premiership lead
Linfield moved to the top of the Irish Premiership with a 3-0 victory over Coleraine at Windsor Park on Saturday. Rhys Brennan, Adam Frizzell and Kitt Nelson scored for David Healy's side, who finished the match one point ahead of their opponents in the standings, according to BBC Sport NI's reporting.
Watch the highlights:
Brennan broke the deadlock shortly before half-time with a lifted finish, giving Linfield the lead after they had kept Coleraine's attack largely contained. The winger, on loan from Bohemians for the season, has now scored three times in his past four appearances. Speaking to BBC Sport NI afterwards, he stressed the importance of collecting three points and said he was enjoying his time at the club.
The second goal arrived seven minutes after the restart, following an opportunity for Coleraine to develop an attack of their own. Ben Wylie failed to find Ben Doherty, and Linfield broke forward before Frizzell finished. Coleraine made four substitutions immediately after that goal in the 52nd minute, but the changes did not produce a second-half shot on target.
Nelson added the third with an individual effort to complete the scoring and secure Linfield's second victory over Coleraine this season. The visitors had previously recovered from two goals down to defeat Larne 3-2, but there was no repeat at Windsor Park. Instead, Linfield preserved their advantage and kept a clean sheet against a side that has scored 32 goals in 15 league matches.
The defensive work included the centre-back partnership of Isaac Baird and Ben Hall, who restricted opportunities for Joel Cooper and Matthew Shevlin. Baird has switched from midfield to defence this season, while Cooper was returning to a ground he knows from two spells with Linfield. Coleraine failed to score in a league fixture for only the second time this campaign.
Linfield have conceded 11 goals in their opening 15 league games, sharing the division's lowest total, and are unbeaten in their past 14 matches. Their only defeat of the season came on the opening day, when Ballymena United won 3-0 at Windsor Park. This latest home result leaves Healy's team leading the standings as they pursue a 58th Gibson Cup.
