Liam Millar settles Coventry’s historic homecoming as Hull stay perfect

Liam Millar scored in the 82nd minute to give Hull City a 1-0 victory at Coventry City and maintain Hull’s perfect start to the Premier League season. The result followed Hull’s win over Manchester United the previous weekend, while Coventry suffered a second consecutive defeat. The Guardian reported that Millar completed a counterattack with a composed finish past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

The occasion carried particular significance for Coventry. It was the club’s first Premier League home match in more than 25 years and its first top-flight game at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Owner and chair Doug King addressed the importance of the day before kickoff, and a large home crowd created a celebratory atmosphere as Frank Lampard’s side sought its first points of the campaign.

Coventry produced the greater attacking threat for much of the match but could not turn that pressure into a goal. Taiwo Awoniyi, making his full league debut for the club, directed one weak header at Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. He later forced a sharper save after Loum Tchaouna’s cross glanced off Nobel Mendy and reached him.

Lampard used his substitutes in an attempt to change the game, with Gus Hamer’s introduction lifting the crowd. Clear openings remained limited, however, and Hull stayed level through the second half. Before the winner, Hull’s only effort on target had been a long-range attempt from Mendy, according to The Guardian’s match report.

Millar entered on the hour in place of Elliot Stroud and initially passed up Hull’s best chance. In the 74th minute, he chose to shoot rather than find the unmarked Mohamed Belloumi and dragged his attempt wide after Oli McBurnie’s first-time pass. Eight minutes later, the Canada winger made amends by finishing a rapid break and scoring his first Premier League goal.

The late strike left Coventry without reward on a landmark day despite being the more threatening team. Hull’s players and manager Sergej Jakirovic celebrated with the visiting support after the final whistle, having followed one notable win with another. Three more points kept Hull’s 100 percent league record intact, while Coventry were left still searching for their first point of the new season.
