Lexi Potter earns first England call-up as Toone and Kelly miss out

Lexi Potter has earned her first senior England call-up as Sarina Wiegman named her squad for the World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece. BBC Sport reported that Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly were left out of the 23-player group announced on September 29.

Potter, 20, has started three of Chelsea's first four Women's Super League matches this season. The midfielder has played alongside Keira Walsh and impressed in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Arsenal, the BBC reported. Both midfielders are in England's squad.

Erica Meg Parkinson, 18, returns to the group after joining North Carolina Courage in the summer. She remains uncapped, as do London City Lionesses forward Freya Godfrey and Liverpool defender Grace Fisk, who have also been selected. Captain Leah Williamson is back following an injury absence, The Guardian reported.

Other omissions reported by the BBC include Chelsea forward Aggie Beever-Jones and Arsenal defenders Lotte Wubben-Moy and Taylor Hinds. Manchester City full-back Niamh Charles is included after returning to club action as a substitute on Saturday.

England Football's published schedule puts the opening leg at the Pankritio Stadium in Crete on Friday, October 9, with kick-off at 5.30pm BST. The return is at Leicester's King Power Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, at 7.30pm BST. Both matches are scheduled for live coverage on ITV.

The tie will not, by itself, settle England's place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The national team's official explanation of the qualifying route says victory over Greece would set up another two-legged contest against either Slovakia or Ukraine. England would be seeded for that second round and would again play the deciding leg at home.

England entered the play-offs after finishing second in their qualifying group despite winning five of six matches. Spain secured the group's direct qualification place. The second play-off round is scheduled for November 26 to December 5, and England Football says the Lionesses would qualify directly for the finals if they win through both rounds.
