Leipzig beat Hamburg 5-0 to end two-game losing run
RB Leipzig beat Hamburger SV 5-0 at home on Sunday, September 13, ending a run of two defeats in league and European competition. Hamburg's official club website confirmed the result from the third round of the Bundesliga season, a week after the visitors had also lost 5-0 against Mainz.
Watch the highlights:
The Guardian reported goals from Tidiam Gomis, Antonio Nusa, Willi Orban, Christopher Nkunku and Romulo. Nkunku had entered the afternoon still seeking his first league goal since returning to Leipzig, according to the Bundesliga's match coverage, which recorded six attempts on goal from him across the opening two rounds.
Leipzig's league campaign had started with a 3-0 home victory over Borussia Monchengladbach before a 3-1 defeat at Werder Bremen, results listed by the German Football Association. The Bundesliga's official account also recorded a subsequent 4-1 Champions League loss at Como. Sunday's win therefore gave Leipzig six points from their first three league matches and a second home clean sheet.
The response came after sporting managing director Marcel Schafer publicly addressed the consecutive defeats on Friday. In comments carried by the Bundesliga, he acknowledged that the results had fallen short while expressing support for the players and coaching staff. He said summer changes and injuries had affected the squad, and that a reshaped team needed time to establish its understanding.
Hamburg, meanwhile, remain without a point or a league goal after three games. The Bundesliga had recorded their opening two defeats and a goal difference of minus seven before kick-off; the latest result takes that figure to minus 12. Coach Merlin Polzin had called for a markedly different performance from the Mainz defeat, saying there were no excuses for that display.
The clubs now return to preparations for the next Bundesliga round. Hamburg's published schedule lists a home match against Cologne on September 19, followed by a trip to Hoffenheim on October 10. Leipzig's next league fixture, according to the German Football Association's calendar, is away to Bayer Leverkusen on September 20.
