Leinster overturn half-time deficit to beat Clermont 48-23
Leinster scored seven tries to open their Champions Cup campaign with a 48-23 win at Clermont. Jack Conan finished the day with his arm in a sling.

Leinster began their Champions Cup campaign with a 48-23 bonus-point victory over Clermont Auvergne at Stade Marcel-Michelin on Saturday, October 17. The visitors scored seven tries after trailing 16-15 at half-time. BBC Sport reported that the pool-one win launched another attempt to secure a fifth European title following their latest final defeat in May.

Watch the highlights:

Tadhg Furlong opened Leinster's scoring in the ninth minute, and Dan Sheehan added a second try after a Clermont line-out went wrong near the hosts' line. Clermont nevertheless stayed in contention through Harry Plummer's kicking and a Joris Jurand try. Plummer contributed 11 first-half points, including the late penalty that sent the home side into the interval narrowly ahead.

Sam Prendergast changed the direction of the match almost immediately after the restart. The fly-half broke forward and kicked towards Jimmy O'Brien, who used his foot to control the ball before gathering and returning it to Prendergast. He finished beneath the posts, putting Leinster back in front at the start of a half in which they scored five tries.

According to The Irish Times, Leinster's scrum pressure then produced a penalty try and a yellow card for Clermont prop Nohem Ez Zahouany. Sheehan's second score stretched the advantage to 36-16 before replacement centre Mathys Belaubre replied for the hosts. That response did not develop into a sustained comeback: Jack Conan scored shortly afterwards, and Tommy O'Brien supplied Leinster's final try in the closing minutes.

The Irish Times also reported that Joey Carbery came off the bench for his first Leinster appearance in more than eight years. Prendergast received the player-of-the-match award for a second successive week, while the forward effort gave the visitors control at scrum and line-out. The result completed a successful European opening before their return to United Rugby Championship action against Munster.

Conan's condition was the principal concern after the victory. Both reports described the number eight with his arm in a sling afterwards, with The Irish Times linking the problem to the grounding of his try. Neither report provided a confirmed diagnosis or recovery timetable, leaving the extent of the issue unclear.
