O'Brien double helps Leinster beat Cardiff 29-5 on Laya Arena return
Leinster claimed their first United Rugby Championship victory of the 2026-27 season by beating Cardiff 29-5 on Saturday, with Jimmy O'Brien scoring two of their five tries. BBC Sport reported that a crowd of 20,600 watched the champions return to the redeveloped Laya Arena, where they secured a bonus point before half-time and handed Cardiff their first defeat of the campaign.
Watch the highlights:
The result followed a difficult opening trip to South Africa for Leo Cullen's side. Leinster had lost to both the Lions and Sharks, collecting three bonus points across those matches. Several Ireland internationals made their first appearances of the season against Cardiff, while the homecoming ended two seasons of playing at Aviva Stadium during the redevelopment of the ground formerly known as the RDS Arena.
Leinster established their advantage through three tries in the opening quarter. Hugo Keenan finished the first after receiving the ball on the left, kicking ahead and regathering. Cardiff scrum-half Aled Davies was then shown a yellow card for stopping the ball illegally near his own line. O'Brien and Jack Conan added tries as the hosts took control of the scoreboard.
Cardiff nevertheless scored while a player short. Callum Sheedy used a penalty to send a cross-kick towards Mason Grady, whose try reduced the deficit to 15-5. That was the visitors' only score. O'Brien crossed again in the 37th minute following a planned attacking move, completing Leinster's four-try bonus point. Sam Prendergast added the conversion to leave the hosts 22-5 ahead at the interval.
The second half produced far fewer scoring opportunities that were converted into points. Cardiff gained territory and made several visits to Leinster's 22, but could not turn those positions into another score. The half remained scoreless until Jamie Osborne crossed from close range with five minutes remaining. Prendergast's second successful conversion completed the 29-5 result and left Cardiff without a league point from the match.
Cardiff also postponed Taulupe Faletau's return after initially naming him in their starting side. BBC Sport reported that the number eight had not played since suffering a shoulder injury against the Sharks in March; Taine Basham came into the team. Cardiff next travel to Northampton in the Champions Cup on 18 October, before a home URC meeting with the Sharks five days later.
