Leicestershire regain eight points but relegation appeal remains decisive

Leicestershire have regained eight County Championship points after a disciplinary sanction was amended, but their place in Division One remains unresolved. BBC Sport reported that the county are still 17 points behind Essex because a separate 19-point deduction remains in force. The club intends to continue its appeal against the underlying pitch-regulations decision.

The case concerns Leicestershire's match against Glamorgan from 20 to 23 August. The Cricket Regulator confirmed that the Cricket Discipline Panel initially upheld the charge and imposed an immediate eight-point penalty, another eight points suspended until the end of the 2027 season, and a £5,000 fine. The immediate deduction has now been removed; the suspended sanction and fine remain.

A separate provision in the competition's playing conditions stripped Leicestershire of all 19 points earned from the fixture. According to BBC Sport, those comprised 16 points for the victory and three bonus points. Together with the panel's original immediate sanction, that produced a 27-point deduction. Restoring eight points reduces the deficit but does not, by itself, lift Leicestershire above Essex or secure their top-flight status.

The regulator said it asked the panel to reconsider whether the separate loss of 19 points should have been factored into the proportionality of its punishment. A further hearing took place on 23 September. The amended decision changes the panel's sanction only: the finding that Leicestershire breached the pitch regulations remains, as does the deduction applied under the playing conditions.

Chief executive Emma White said in a club statement that the latest hearing was not an appeal and that Leicestershire's opposition to the charge had not changed. She said the planned challenge would focus on the process and the evidence on which the panel reached its decision. Barrister Craig Harris and Oliver Laurence of Periculum Sport will continue to represent the county through that process.

The remaining 19 points are decisive for the relegation outcome. BBC Sport reported that Leicestershire would have finished two points above the relegation zone without the deductions, but will go down if their appeal fails. Both the regulator and the club have said they will make no further comment while the appeal process continues.
