Leicestershire confirm appeal against 27-point pitch penalty

Leicestershire will appeal against their 27-point County Championship deduction over the pitch used for August's home match against Glamorgan, BBC Sport reported on Thursday. Chief executive Emma White confirmed the decision before the county's final Championship fixture, leaving the relegation picture unresolved as the season approaches its conclusion.

White said the club had concerns about both the process behind the Cricket Discipline Panel's ruling and the sanctioning procedure. According to the BBC, Leicestershire have appointed sports law barrister Craig Harris to represent them, with Oliver Laurence providing independent support. White also said the panel had found no intention to produce the conditions that developed and had not treated the case as cheating.

The club's September 16 statement sets out two separate elements of the points loss. The panel imposed an eight-point deduction and a £5,000 fine, while Championship playing conditions required the removal of the 19 points earned against Glamorgan. A further eight-point penalty was suspended until the end of the 2027 season, rather than being added to this year's immediate deduction.

The disputed fixture ran from August 20 to 23 at Uptonsteel Grace Road, where Leicestershire won by 42 runs, according to the club's match records. In a September 8 statement, the county had disputed the Cricket Regulator's allegations and confirmed it had responded to the disciplinary panel. After receiving the ruling, it initially said it was considering its options.

Leicestershire have since recorded a five-wicket home victory over Hampshire, the club's results list confirms. Their remaining Championship match is away to Warwickshire at Edgbaston, scheduled to begin on September 24. That follows a September programme which also included a draw at Nottinghamshire and a 377-run defeat at home to Somerset.

BBC Sport reported that Hampshire are already relegated, but the appeal could affect the positions of Surrey, Essex and Glamorgan as well as Leicestershire. The Championship is due to finish on Sunday. An appeal outcome remains pending, so the announcement does not establish that any deducted points will be restored.
