Leicester overturn Northampton lead with four second-half tries in 28-7 derby win
Leicester scored four second-half tries to beat Northampton 28-7 at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday, turning a difficult opening half into a bonus-point derby victory. Jamie Blamire, Cameron Henderson, Finn Carnduff and Freddie Steward crossed for the hosts, according to Michael Aylwin's match report for The Guardian. Northampton, the champions, were unable to add to their first-half score.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors struck first through James Pater. Playing with an advantage, Finn Smith kicked behind Leicester's defence, and Pater collected after Billy Searle failed to hold the ball. Leicester had opportunities to respond through a succession of penalties but repeatedly lost possession after choosing attacking lineouts. Four penalties sent to the corner during the opening quarter produced no breakthrough for the home side.
A confrontation between players continued after the half-time whistle and extended into the Crumbie Stand. Northampton coach Phil Dowson subsequently played down its significance, describing the pushing and arguments as part of a derby rather than an explanation for the result. Leicester's response after the interval was much more effective than their first-half work, with their lineout and driving play immediately producing a try.
Blamire scored within four minutes of the restart to put Leicester one point ahead. Henderson then claimed a lineout after a strong scrum had won a penalty, before finishing in the corner from Gabriel Hamer-Webb's pass. That increased the lead to six points. Carnduff followed five minutes later, completing another attack built from a lineout and taking Leicester more than a converted try clear.
The fourth try followed a reversal of a disciplinary decision in the final 10 minutes. Smith's cross-kick had released George Hendy from Northampton's own 22, and Adam Radwan was initially shown a yellow card for a slap-down. An earlier head collision between Tom Lockett and Solomone Kata was then considered, resulting in a yellow card for Lockett instead. Radwan's card was rescinded and he returned to the field.
Leicester used the ensuing lineout to send Steward over for the try that secured their bonus point. Their second-half scoring left Northampton without an answer in the wet and windy conditions. Leicester head coach Geoff Parling praised the support inside Welford Road afterwards, while the decisive difference on the pitch was the hosts' ability to convert set-piece opportunities they had wasted before the break.
