Leicester overturn half-time deficit to beat Northampton 28-7 in derby
Leicester Tigers beat Northampton Saints 28-7 at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday, October 24, scoring four tries after half-time to overturn a 7-3 deficit. BBC Sport's match report described a complete second-half turnaround in torrential conditions, as the hosts denied their East Midlands rivals any further points after the interval.
Watch the highlights:
According to Sky Sports, James Pater scored the opening try after Fin Smith chipped towards Leicester's line and Billy Searle failed to gather the ball. Smith added the conversion. Freddie Steward then opened Leicester's account with a long-range penalty, but the Tigers were still four points behind when the teams left the field at half-time.
Jamie Blamire put Leicester ahead early in the second half by finishing a driving maul. Cameron Henderson followed him over after receiving a pass from Gabriel Hamer-Webb, before Finn Carnduff scored from close range. Searle missed the conversions to those three tries but subsequently landed a penalty. Sky reported that the win moved Leicester into second place, with three victories from four league games.
The Northampton Chronicle's report identified Leicester's improved set piece as a major difference between the two halves. A lineout that had struggled before the break became more reliable, while the home scrum increased the pressure on Saints. With rain continuing to affect the match, Northampton could not preserve the advantage they had built through Pater's try and Smith's conversion.
A late disciplinary review then went against the visitors. Adam Radwan had initially been shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on after George Hendy broke forward. The Chronicle reported that referee Craig Maxwell-Keys reviewed an earlier incident, sin-binned Northampton replacement Tom Lockett for a high tackle on Solomone Kata and allowed Radwan to return immediately.
Leicester kicked the resulting penalty to the corner. Northampton stopped the initial maul, but the Tigers then moved the ball to Steward, who scored under the posts to secure the try bonus point. Searle converted to complete Leicester's scoring. Saints attempted one more attack but were held up, ending an afternoon in which their first-half lead had become a 21-point defeat.
