Leeds score 12 tries in 66-16 rout of York

Leeds Rhinos returned to the top of the Super League table with a 66-16 victory over York Knights at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium on Sunday. BBC Sport reported that Leeds scored 12 tries in a dominant response to their home defeat by Leigh the previous week, with winger Riley Lumb completing a hat-trick. The result moved the Rhinos ahead of Wigan Warriors on points difference.

Leeds established a 36-0 lead by half-time after taking control from the opening stages. Lumb scored the first two tries, initially finishing a move created by Ryan Hall's interception and counterattack before beating Jon Bennison to the ball for his second. Lumb then supplied Chris Hankinson for Leeds' third try as York struggled to contain the visitors' pace.

Kallum Watkins added the fourth after Lachie Miller's kick disrupted the York defence, and Mikolaj Oledzki forced his way through three defenders for another score. Cameron Smith then created the sixth by evading tacklers and finding Miller. York briefly appeared to have opened its account through Sam Wood, but the try was ruled out for obstruction involving Watkins.

Debutant Matthew Lodge extended the lead from close range after the interval before Wood finally scored for York, winning the ball in the air against Brodie Croft. Leeds quickly resumed its scoring through Hall, who registered his ninth try of the season, and Lumb completed his hat-trick. Croft, Ash Handley and Hankinson also crossed as the Rhinos kept adding to their total.

York found two further late tries through Bennison and David Nofoaluma, but the defeat was the club's heaviest against its Yorkshire rival, according to the BBC report. Jake Connor and Hankinson each kicked four goals for Leeds, while Miller added another. Bennison converted two of York's three tries. York remained 12th in the table after the loss.

Leeds head coach Brad Arthur told BBC Radio Leeds that he had not expected his side to score 66 points, but was pleased with its intent and mentality. He also acknowledged that the team's focus drifted at times in the second half. York coach Mark Applegarth told BBC Radio York that his side needed greater composure in possession and better control around the ruck when facing leading teams.
