Lawrence Dallaglio to auction 2003 World Cup medal after bankruptcy

Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio is putting his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner's medal and other career memorabilia up for auction after being declared bankrupt, BBC Sport reported. The collection has an estimated total value of £180,000, with the World Cup medal expected to account for the largest share.

Auction house Budds lists the medal as lot 90, with an estimate of £50,000 to £80,000. Its Octoberfest sporting memorabilia sale is scheduled for 13 October, starting at 11am. The catalogue's Dallaglio selection contains 22 lots within a broader auction featuring more than 300 lots across several sports.

Dallaglio was part of the England team that beat Australia to win the 2003 World Cup. Now 54, he made 326 appearances for Wasps during his club career, according to BBC Sport. The items being offered cover both his international achievements and a series of successes in club rugby.

The catalogue includes his 2007 World Cup runners-up medal, estimated at £5,000 to £10,000, and his 1993 World Cup Sevens winner's medal, valued at £1,000 to £1,500. A 2003 Six Nations winner's medal is also listed, alongside medals from Premiership finals and European club competitions.

Other lots include an England international cap, a British and Irish Lions cap and a training shirt from the Lions' 1997 South Africa tour. Budds estimates the Lions cap at £3,500 to £5,500 and the training shirt at £1,500 to £2,000. The collection also includes individual awards and tankards.

The figures are pre-sale estimates, not confirmed proceeds. Budds says viewing can be arranged by appointment at its Wellingborough auction room, and buyers will pay a 25% premium plus VAT. Internet surcharges and shipping costs may also apply, depending on how a purchase is made and delivered.

BBC Sport reported that Dallaglio discussed his bankruptcy on The High Performance podcast earlier this month. He linked it to his divorce and acknowledged that he could have handled his financial affairs better. He also said he had sought therapy after the divorce and bankruptcy.
