Lawrence century puts Surrey in control and dents Somerset title hopes

Dan Lawrence struck his sixth County Championship hundred of the season as Surrey closed on 327-4 against Somerset at Taunton on Thursday, leaving the hosts' title ambitions under further pressure. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, Lawrence finished unbeaten on 105 after Surrey won the toss and chose to bat in the final Division One fixture.

Lawrence's innings came from 136 deliveries and included nine fours and four sixes. He reached his century by hitting Jack Leach over wide long-on in the final over of the day, continuing a notable run of converting starts: every time he has reached fifty in red-ball cricket this summer, he has gone on to make a hundred.

Ben Foakes provided unbeaten support with 64, and the pair added 153 without being separated for the fifth wicket. Their partnership took Surrey from 174-4 to their closing total, with the scoring gathering pace during the final session. Lawrence needed 86 balls for his fifty, while Foakes reached his own half-century from 93 deliveries as Somerset struggled to find another breakthrough.

Earlier, Dom Sibley had supplied the foundation with 72 from 188 balls. He was unbeaten on 35 when Surrey reached lunch at 86-2 and later brought up his fifty from 138 deliveries. His innings ended shortly before tea when he glanced Migael Pretorius to Tom Abell at leg-slip, giving Somerset their fourth wicket after a patient contribution at the top of the order.

Somerset's other successes were spread across the attack. Rory Burns made 31 before top-edging a sweep against Leach to Abell at short fine-leg. Ryan Patel then scored 16 before being caught at slip off Archie Vaughan, while Lewis Gregory trapped Ollie Pope lbw with the total at 131. Those wickets checked Surrey's progress without producing a sustained collapse.

The report described a surface offering little help to Somerset's seamers, with Gregory introducing spin as early as the eighth over. Nearly 3,000 spectators watched the opening day, which ended with Somerset still to bat and Surrey holding two bonus points to the home side's one. Somerset's pursuit of a first Championship title had suffered a setback, but the match itself remained unfinished.
