Laurie Evans joins Essex on one-year white-ball deal with Championship option
Essex have signed Laurie Evans from Surrey on a one-year white-ball contract ahead of the 2027 season, with an option to play in the County Championship. The club confirmed the move on Thursday, adding the 39-year-old right-hander to its batting options for next season's T20 Blast. BBC Sport also reported the agreement.
Watch the highlights:
Evans arrives with a T20 career spanning 382 appearances since his debut for Surrey in 2009. According to Essex, he has scored almost 8,000 runs in 344 innings, including 44 half-centuries and three hundreds. BBC Sport put his career strike-rate at just under 140. He has previously played county cricket for Warwickshire and Sussex as well as Surrey.
His highest T20 score remains an unbeaten 118, made from 60 balls against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens in 2023. Essex's announcement recalled that Evans opened the batting and hit 12 fours and six sixes as Surrey won that Blast fixture by 65 runs. He will wear number 32 for his new club.
The signing also brings experience from franchise competitions in Australia, Pakistan, the Caribbean, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates. Evans has represented teams including Perth Scorchers, Barbados Royals and Multan Sultans. Essex said he won the Big Bash League with Perth in January. His experience in The Hundred includes spells with Oval Invincibles, Manchester Originals and Birmingham Phoenix.
Essex director of cricket Chris Silverwood said the club expected Evans to contribute more than runs. In the announcement, Silverwood highlighted the batter's involvement in successful teams and said his knowledge could help younger players develop. He also identified leadership away from the field as a benefit to the squad, alongside the attacking approach Evans brings to his batting.
Evans said he hoped to share lessons from playing in different cricket environments with his new team-mates. He described his aims as entertaining supporters, winning matches and competing for trophies, and said he wanted to contribute both as a player and within the dressing room. The contract is primarily for white-ball cricket; his possible participation in the Championship remains an option within the agreement.
