Lauren Parfitt becomes Glamorgan Women's first professional cricketer

Glamorgan Women captain Lauren Parfitt has become the first player to receive a professional contract from the Welsh county, BBC Sport reported on Wednesday. The agreement marks an important step in the team's transition ahead of its planned move into Tier 1 of the English women's domestic structure in 2027.

Parfitt, 32, has a long association with cricket in Wales. She captained the Wales side from the age of 18 and also represented regional team Western Storm before taking charge of the newly created Glamorgan team for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. To concentrate on her professional cricket role, she will take a sabbatical from her work as a physical education teacher and head of year at Bassaleg School in Newport.

The contract follows a successful spell for Glamorgan under Parfitt's captaincy. The team won the League Two T20 Blast title earlier this summer and advanced to the One Day Cup semi-finals. Glamorgan are scheduled to host Kent in that semi-final on Sunday, September 13. Parfitt has opened the batting and is the county side's leading run-scorer, according to the BBC report.

Parfitt said becoming a professional fulfilled a dream she had held since she was 11, at a time when she did not believe such a career would be available to her. She also described playing for Glamorgan as a privilege and said the side had established a strong foundation before the challenge of Tier 1 cricket.

Aimee Rees, Glamorgan's head of women's and girls' cricket, called the contract a landmark for the county's women's programme and a significant development in the professionalisation of cricket in Wales. BBC Sport reported that Parfitt is likely to be joined by leading members of the present squad as well as recruits from teams already playing professionally in Tier 1.

Glamorgan have regularly used the permitted maximum of three loan players in matches while assessing possible additions for their first top-flight season. Parfitt's deal gives the club its first confirmed professional player as that recruitment and preparation continue, while retaining the captain who has led the team through its first two seasons.
