Lando Norris signs new McLaren contract through 2030

McLaren has secured the long-term future of Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris, announcing a contract extension that will keep the British driver with the team until at least the end of the 2030 season. The agreement extends a partnership that began before Norris made his Formula 1 debut for McLaren in 2019.

BBC Sport reported on Saturday that Norris did not hold talks about a move elsewhere before committing to McLaren, despite interest from other teams. His previous contract still had more than a year remaining, so neither side faced an immediate deadline. Norris said the possibility of extending had been discussed loosely over roughly the past four months and that his decision was straightforward.

The timing gives McLaren continuity during a season that began with the team struggling to match its competitiveness from 2024 and 2025 under Formula 1's new technical rules. Norris indicated that the difficult opening did not weaken his commitment. Instead, he viewed working through the team's problems with the same group of people as another reason to remain.

McLaren's form has improved following a major car upgrade. Norris has won the two most recent grands prix, in Hungary and the Netherlands, cutting his deficit to Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 83 points. Eleven races remain on the published schedule, although BBC Sport noted that the conflict in the Middle East could affect how many are ultimately staged.

Norris credited his relationship with McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown, team principal Andrea Stella and the wider organisation as central to the extension. Stella said the deal provides important continuity and highlighted the partnership between Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri. Brown described Norris's progress as an example of McLaren identifying, developing and supporting leading talent.

The new agreement follows the most successful phase of Norris's career and McLaren's modern revival. The team won the constructors' championship in both 2024 and 2025, ending a drought dating to 1998, while Norris captured the drivers' championship last season. McLaren now has its reigning champion under contract through the end of the decade as it tries to sustain its recent recovery and close the remaining gap in the 2026 title race.
