Lammonby's unbeaten 74 lifts Somerset to 119-run lead at Hove

Tom Lammonby's unbeaten 74 put Somerset in control of their County Championship Division One match against Sussex at Hove. Somerset closed the second day on 167-2 in their second innings, a lead of 119 runs with eight wickets remaining. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said the innings was Lammonby's highest score of the season.

Somerset began their second innings 48 runs behind after Sussex reached 250 in reply to the visitors' 202. Lammonby and Josh Thomas then shared a 92-run opening stand as batting conditions improved. Thomas was the first wicket to fall, edging Sean Hunt to Charlie Tear at slip after making 45.

Archie Vaughan added 49 with Lammonby before Jaydev Unadkat had him caught behind off an inside edge. Lammonby, who faced 143 balls, and Henry Nicholls then negotiated the final 10 overs of the day. Their resistance left Somerset with the platform to extend the lead when play resumes.

Earlier, Sussex had reached 149-2 and appeared positioned for a sizeable first-innings advantage, with Tom Clark scoring 85. His dismissal triggered a slide in which Sussex lost seven wickets for 61 runs across 29 overs. Craig Overton removed Clark and Tear, who made 34, before later dismissing Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe.

Overton finished with 4-66, while Lewis Gregory dismissed James Coles and debutant Joey Evison. Sussex nevertheless moved ahead through a 40-run final-wicket partnership between John Simpson and Unadkat. Simpson ended unbeaten on 64, his highest Championship score in eight innings, while Unadkat's two scoring shots were both sixes. Jack Leach ended the stand by dismissing Unadkat.

The match remains significant to both teams' title ambitions. Somerset collected three bonus points and Sussex four over the first two days, including a batting point secured during the final-wicket stand. A poor forecast for day three could reduce the time available to force a result, but Somerset's second-innings position gives them the stronger hand entering the next phase of the contest.
