Lammonby Leads Somerset Recovery Against Sussex at Hove
Tom Lammonby’s unbeaten 74 helped Somerset turn a first-innings deficit into a 119-run lead against Sussex on day two of their County Championship Division One match at Hove. Somerset closed Friday on 167-2 in their second innings after Sussex had been dismissed for 250.
Watch the highlights:
The ECB Reporters’ Network, in a report published by BBC Sport, said Lammonby faced 143 balls in a chanceless innings that was his highest score of the season. The opener had made only one in Somerset’s first-innings total of 202 and entered the match averaging 28 during a difficult campaign.
Lammonby shared a 92-run opening partnership with Josh Thomas as conditions became more favorable for batting. Thomas was eventually removed when he edged Sean Hunt to Charlie Tear at slip. Archie Vaughan then added 49 with Lammonby before Jaydev Unadkat had him caught behind off an inside edge, leaving Henry Nicholls to help Lammonby negotiate the final 10 overs.
Earlier, Sussex had moved from their overnight position to 250, securing a 48-run first-innings advantage. Tom Clark made 85, but his dismissal to Craig Overton triggered a slide in which Sussex lost seven wickets for 61 runs across 29 overs. Overton finished with 4-66 and also dismissed Tear, Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe.
Sussex’s last-wicket pair stretched the total through a 40-run stand between John Simpson and Unadkat. Simpson finished unbeaten on 64, his best score in eight Championship innings, despite being dropped three times. Unadkat’s only scoring shots were two leg-side sixes before Jack Leach ended the partnership when the batter missed a sweep.
Somerset carry eight second-innings wickets into day three and have an opportunity to build a demanding target. Both sides retain title ambitions, but the report noted that a poor weather forecast could limit their chances of forcing a result. Lammonby, 26 runs short of a century, will resume with the chance to extend Somerset’s advantage and complete his first hundred of the season.
