Lammonby Leads Somerset to 119-Run Advantage Over Sussex

Tom Lammonby made an unbeaten 74 as Somerset reached 167-2 in their second innings and built a 119-run lead over Sussex on day two of their County Championship Division One match at Hove. The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report published by BBC Sport, said Lammonby's innings was his highest score of the season after a lean run in which he entered the match averaging 28.

Somerset had made 202 in their first innings, led by Tom Abell's 72, before Sussex replied with 250. The visitors began their second innings 48 runs behind but Lammonby and Josh Thomas put on 92 for the opening wicket as batting conditions improved. Lammonby reached stumps from 143 balls and remained 26 runs short of a century.

Thomas fell when he edged Sean Hunt to Charlie Tear at slip after being surprised by extra bounce. Archie Vaughan then added 49 with Lammonby before Jaydev Unadkat had him caught behind off an inside edge. Henry Nicholls joined Lammonby for the final 10 overs, and the pair ensured Somerset closed with eight wickets still available.

Earlier, Sussex had been well placed at 149-2 while Tom Clark scored at a run a ball. His dismissal for 85 began a slide in which seven wickets fell for 61 runs across 29 overs. Craig Overton removed Clark and Tear, who made 34, before returning after lunch to dismiss Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe. Overton finished with 4-66.

Sussex's lower order then reduced the damage through a last-wicket partnership of 40 between John Simpson and Unadkat. Simpson ended unbeaten on 64, his highest score in eight Championship innings, while Unadkat's two scoring strokes were both sixes. Jack Leach ended the stand by dismissing Unadkat, but Sussex's total also secured a batting bonus point.

The match remains significant to both teams' title ambitions, with the report describing Somerset's challenge as revived and Sussex as retaining outside hopes. Somerset hold three points from the match so far and Sussex four. The position could still be shaped by the weather, however, because the ECB Reporters' Network noted a poor forecast for day three that may make it harder for either side to force a victory.
