La Liga keeps weekend matches on with three clubs exempt after De Miguel death
La Liga will proceed with its weekend programme apart from matches involving Tenerife, Andorra and Castellón, according to the Guardian. The decision follows a players' union appeal for a wider pause after Jesús de Miguel's death.

La Liga will proceed with its weekend fixtures except those involving Tenerife, Andorra and Castellón following the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, the Guardian reported on Thursday. The decision means there will not be the wider suspension sought by Spain's players' union, which had consulted footballers about whether they felt able to compete.

According to the Guardian, the AFE union said players wanted matches stopped because they did not feel mentally ready to return. The league confirmed its decision on Thursday afternoon. The exemptions cover De Miguel's club, the opponents in the match in which he was injured, and Castellón, one of his former teams.

De Miguel, 30, died in hospital on Tuesday after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday's second-division match. BBC Sport reported that medical staff treated the forward on the pitch before he was taken to hospital, and that the game was abandoned. He had joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025.

The scheduling decision came on the day of his funeral in Navahermosa, his parents' hometown in Toledo. Tenerife's players and staff travelled to the mainland for the service, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and representatives from across Spanish football also attended. BBC Sport reported that his team-mates carried his coffin. A statement issued through his agent thanked people for their support and asked that the family's privacy be respected.

Other competitions had already responded to the tragedy. The Guardian reported that the Spanish federation cancelled Copa del Rey matches, while the Champions League continued. BBC Sport said minute's silences were being held at European competition matches this week. Supporters also gathered outside Tenerife's stadium, leaving flowers and candles in memory of the striker.

Further support is being organised for De Miguel's family. According to the Guardian, Almería said receipts from their match against Tenerife would go to the family, and former Tenerife player Fran Sol set up a crowdfunding appeal. Tenerife will also hold an event at their stadium on Saturday that is open to everyone, allowing supporters to pay their respects after Thursday's funeral on the mainland.
