Kyle Kirkwood Dominates Freedom 250 for Second IndyCar Win of Season

Kyle Kirkwood controlled the Freedom 250 on Sunday, earning his second IndyCar victory of the season on the streets of downtown Washington. The American finished 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard after leading 128 of the race's 147 laps, according to an Associated Press report published by The Guardian.

Kirkwood crossed the finish line in front of the Capitol to head an all-Andretti Global podium sweep of the top four positions reported from the event. Lundgaard took second place, while Will Power finished third and Marcus Ericsson followed in fourth. President Donald Trump waved the green flag to begin the race, which was staged as part of the United States' 250th birthday celebration, and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser served as grand marshal.

The race went under caution soon after the start because of debris at Turn 4. A more serious incident followed when David Malukas hit the wall and Sting Ray Robb, approaching the scene around a turn, was unable to avoid a collision. Both drivers were eliminated from the race.

Championship leader Alex Palou endured a difficult afternoon after starting from pole position with an opportunity to secure the series title. The report said Palou appeared to strike a tire in another team's pit area while leaving his box, resulting in a drive-through penalty. A loose tire during a later stop caused another delay, and Palou subsequently spun. He finished 20th, his second-worst result of the season.

Palou's spin erased a commanding Kirkwood advantage by bringing out another caution. On the restart with 19 laps left, Scott McLaughlin attempted to pass Kirkwood but ended up in a tire barrier. Kirkwood then handled the final restart with 13 laps remaining and kept Lundgaard from mounting a serious challenge over the closing distance.

The result tightened the championship standings without dislodging Palou from the lead. His advantage over second-placed Kirkwood fell from 133 points to 91, with three races remaining. Kirkwood's dominant performance therefore delivered both a race win in Washington and a substantial reduction in the gap at the top of the title race.
