Kuldeep Yadav Takes 10 as Yorkshire Crush Essex at Headingley

Yorkshire completed an innings-and-106-run victory over Essex inside three days at Headingley, with Kuldeep Yadav taking career-best first-class match figures of 10-120. BBC Sport, carrying reporting from the ECB Reporters’ Network, said the win was Yorkshire’s fourth in 12 County Championship matches and strengthened their position in Division One with two fixtures remaining.

Yorkshire’s 390 established control of the match after they chose to bat. Dom Bess anchored the lower half of the innings with an unbeaten 80, while Adam Lyth made 62, Matthew Revis 61 and Will Luxton 50. Kuldeep also contributed 36 during an 83-run eighth-wicket partnership with Bess. Matt Critchley led Essex’s bowling effort with 5-85.

Essex resumed their first innings on the third morning at 137-7 and reached 171 all out. George Bell, playing his first Essex innings since joining on loan from Lancashire, finished unbeaten on 64 after sharing a 68-run eighth-wicket stand with Zaman Akhter. George Hill dismissed Akhter and Sam Cook, while Kuldeep bowled Mitch Killeen to close the innings. Hill returned 3-12 and Kuldeep 4-70.

Yorkshire enforced the follow-on with a lead of 219, and Essex’s second innings quickly deteriorated. Hill removed Dean Elgar and Tom Westley inside nine overs. Kuldeep then dismissed Charlie Allison and Critchley with consecutive deliveries before lunch, reducing Essex to 14-4, although he did not complete the hat-trick.

Kuldeep added Luc Benkenstein and Bell to his haul as Essex struggled to build a recovery. Bell made 28 in a 40-run partnership with opener Paul Walter, but his dismissal at 66 was followed by another collapse. Bess trapped Shane Snater lbw, Kuldeep bowled Akhter, and Walter was stumped off Bess for an innings-high 48.

Kuldeep bowled Cook to dismiss Essex for 113 and finish the second innings with 6-50 from 16 overs. His combined figures surpassed his previous best in first-class cricket, while Hill took five wickets across the match. Yorkshire collected 22 points from the victory and Essex two. Yorkshire next host Somerset, while Essex are due to face Warwickshire at Chelmsford.
