Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Agrees Deal to Buy Los Angeles Angels

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment has agreed to buy a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from owner Arte Moreno, according to reporting by The Guardian and agencies. The transaction was announced Tuesday and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to approval by Major League Baseball and its owners.

The exact purchase price was not disclosed. The Guardian, citing the Los Angeles Times, reported that the valuation exceeds the $3.9 billion paid for the San Diego Padres earlier in 2026, which would make the Angels transaction an MLB record. Moreno bought the club for $183.5 million in 2003.

The acquisition would add baseball to a broad Kroenke Sports & Entertainment portfolio. The group, led by Stan Kroenke, owns the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids. Its holdings also include Arsenal's men's and women's teams, a professional lacrosse club and an NWSL expansion franchise scheduled to begin play in 2028.

Moreno's tenure began one year after the Angels won the 2002 World Series. The team reached the postseason five times in his first seven years as owner, but has qualified only once in the past 16 seasons and has not won a playoff game during that span. The Angels entered Tuesday with a 53-85 record and were headed toward an 11th consecutive losing season.

The long downturn continued despite the presence of prominent players. Mike Trout has been with the Angels since 2011 and made his only postseason appearance in 2014, when Kansas City swept Los Angeles in a best-of-five series. Trout and Shohei Ohtani were teammates for six seasons, but the club did not reach the playoffs during that period. Between 2014 and 2023, the pair combined for five Most Valuable Player awards in Angels uniforms.

Kroenke described the Angels as an established franchise in a major market and said the group was looking ahead to the organization's future. Moreno said his family believed KSE's experience and record made it the right next owner. The announced transfer now moves into MLB's formal approval process before the planned 2027 closing.
