Konsa and Gabriel score as Arsenal beat Everton to draw level with Manchester City
Goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhães earned Arsenal a 2-0 win over Everton, taking them level on points with Manchester City.

Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday to draw level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Ezri Konsa scored his first goal for the club before Gabriel Magalhães added a second after the interval, with the champions taking advantage of City's earlier defeat at Aston Villa, according to the Guardian's match report.

Watch the highlights:

The breakthrough came in the seventh minute from Arsenal's third successive corner. Gabriel met the delivery at the near post and Jordan Pickford pushed the ball against the crossbar. Vitaliy Mykolenko then failed to clear under pressure from Viktor Gyökeres, allowing Konsa to finish from close range. It was Arsenal's first set-piece goal of the campaign after they scored 25 last season.

Mikel Arteta made five changes following the midweek match against Bayern Munich, but Arsenal still created opportunities to build on their early advantage. Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke both missed chances, while Madueke also went close with a right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area around the half-hour mark. Arsenal forced 10 corners before the break without adding another goal.

Everton's best opening of the first half came shortly before the interval. A lapse from Ben White gave Thierno Barry a chance, but the forward could not make sufficient contact as he tried to flick the ball past David Raya. The visitors were without Jarrad Branthwaite and Jack Grealish, with Grealish missing the match through illness, the Guardian reported.

Gyökeres made his first Premier League start of the season but remained without a club goal this term. Arteta was booked for protesting after the striker was penalised for a foul on James Tarkowski. Arsenal subsequently made changes, and Gabriel headed home White's cross at the back post to establish a two-goal cushion midway through the second half.

David Moyes was also booked, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall later sent a header narrowly wide as Everton sought a response. The result left the visitors with two consecutive defeats after opening their league season with six unbeaten matches. Arsenal and City have now each won at least seven of their first eight league games, leaving the defending champions level with their rivals on points.
