Virat Kohli Reaches Another Milestone, Breaks T20 Century Partnership Record
Virat Kohli and Phil Salt launched Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a commanding start against Mumbai Indians, with Kohli surpassing Babar Azam to become the owner of the most century partnerships in T20 cricket history.

Some records are meant to fall. Virat Kohli made sure he was the one holding the distinction when the latest one tumbled.

Kohli and Phil Salt produced a breathtaking opening display at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, dismantling the Mumbai Indians bowling attack in a 120-run stand that laid the foundation for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's commanding total. Salt led the assault with a blistering 78 off just 36 balls, hitting the ball to every corner of the ground with a confidence that set the tone for the entire innings.

Kohli, playing his anchor role to perfection, contributed 50 before being dismissed by Hardik Pandya. It was a measured knock from a man who has built an entire T20 philosophy around presence and rotation — but make no mistake, this was no quiet evening. The partnership was commanding, the execution precise, and the result historic.

That historic result came in the form of Kohli's 47th century partnership in T20 cricket, surpassing Babar Azam's 46 to claim sole ownership of the record. In doing so, he moved past a group of all-time greats including Chris Gayle with 46, David Warner with 45 and Faf du Plessis with 40. The company he keeps at the top of this particular list says everything about where his career stands among the legends of the format.

The stand also became RCB's second-highest opening partnership against Mumbai Indians in IPL history, trailing only the 148-run effort between Kohli and Faf du Plessis in Bengaluru back in 2023. Given how often these two franchises have faced each other, that speaks to how rare and difficult this kind of opening dominance has been.

Kohli has been a cornerstone of RCB since the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Fifteen years later, he remains not just relevant but transformative — the kind of player whose mere presence at the crease changes how opposing teams think about their plans. The franchise enters IPL 2026 as the defending champions, having clinched the 2025 title with a win over Punjab Kings in the final.

At 37, Kohli continues to find ways to evolve without declining. His fitness, his shot selection, his ability to shift gears between accumulation and acceleration — all remain elite. The record that fell on Sunday might well be one he extends further before he's done. That is the nature of watching greatness at work.
