Taylor Knibb and Vincent Luis claim Kona world titles after late lead changes
Taylor Knibb regained the lead near the finish to win in Hawaii, while Vincent Luis secured the men's title on his Kona debut.

Taylor Knibb won the women's Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona on Saturday, while France's Vincent Luis took the men's title after both races changed leaders late in the marathon. Kauai Now reported that the event brought the professional men and women back together in Kona for the first time since 2019.

Watch the highlights:

Knibb's victory followed a reversal in the closing stages against defending champion Solveig Løvseth. According to Triathlons.com, the Norwegian overtook the American with roughly eight kilometres remaining and built a lead of more than a minute. But Løvseth then struggled to keep moving and collapsed repeatedly, allowing Knibb to regain first place in the final mile.

The results published by Triathlons.com put Knibb's winning time at 8:36:29, ahead of Germany's Laura Philipp in 8:39:34. Switzerland's Julie Derron completed the podium in 8:46:25. Løvseth eventually reached the finish in eighth place in 9:02:09, with France's Anne-Sophie Pierre ninth and Australia's Grace Thek rounding out the top ten.

The outcome contrasted with Knibb's experience a year earlier, when she had been leading before collapsing near the end and failing to finish. In comments reported by Kauai Now, Knibb said that experience influenced her response when Løvseth passed her this time. She concentrated on looking after herself and reaching the finish rather than forcing an immediate contest for the lead.

In the men's race, Triathlons.com reported that Luis moved past Denmark's Magnus Ditlev as the long-time leader slowed during the marathon. Racing in Kona for the first time at 37, Luis finished in 7:47:27. Norway's Gustav Iden followed in 7:49:03, while American Matthew Marquardt secured third in 7:49:59.

Both Iden and Marquardt had served three-minute drafting penalties during the bike leg, according to Kauai Now. Iden nevertheless finished strongly enough to claim the Ironman Pro Series title. Philipp took the women's series crown alongside her runner-up finish in Kona, adding a separate season-long success to a day defined by late changes in the championship races.
