Kingofthefrontier gives John Dawson 20-1 Grade Two victory at Cheltenham
Kingofthefrontier won the Grade Two Oddschecker Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on Friday, October 23, giving trainer John Dawson a major success with a 20-1 outsider. Conor O'Farrell rode the five-year-old to a two-and-a-quarter-length victory over Planters Punch in the race registered as the Sharp Novices' Hurdle, with favourite Cooltobecareless finishing third.
Watch the highlights:
The result came on Cheltenham's opening day of the season and represented a sharp rise in class for a horse whose previous outing had brought a maiden hurdle win at Southwell in June. Racing Post reported that Kingofthefrontier was only Dawson's third runner at Cheltenham, adding to the significance of the victory for the trainer.
O'Farrell kept his mount towards the back for much of the race before asking him to advance downhill. According to Racing TV, Kingofthefrontier was still well behind the leaders entering the straight, but closed on them approaching the final hurdle. He moved ahead on the run-in and, after wandering, finished strongly beside the near-side rail.
Sporting Life's result recorded ten runners over two miles and 87 yards on good-to-soft ground, with a winning time of three minutes 55.70 seconds. Nicky Henderson's Planters Punch, ridden by Nico de Boinville, finished half a length ahead of Cooltobecareless. The third-placed horse was trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Harry Skelton, having started the 13-8 favourite.
Dawson told Racing TV that the winner remained inexperienced and had needed help with his balance during the race. He said the horse's speed had not been his concern; the question had been whether he was good enough for this level. The trainer wanted time to assess the performance before settling on his next plans.
A return for the Cheltenham Festival remains a hope rather than a confirmed target. Speaking to Racing Post, Dawson said the horse's ability to cope with summer ground gave him encouragement about a possible March appearance. Dawson already has Festival-winning experience as a jockey, having ridden Sine Nomine to victory in the hunters' chase in 2024.
