Kieran Hardy ruled out for season as knee surgery clouds World Cup hopes
Wales scrum-half Kieran Hardy will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for a serious knee injury, leaving his availability for the 2027 Rugby World Cup uncertain. BBC Sport reported that Ospreys head coach Mark Jones has ruled the 30-year-old out for the current campaign but hopes he can recover in time for the tournament in Australia.
Watch the highlights:
Hardy sustained the injury during Ospreys' United Rugby Championship victory over Dragons at Rodney Parade and had an operation this week. Jones said the damage involved a major knee ligament, with additional problems also requiring treatment. His comments confirmed a lengthy absence, while stopping short of guaranteeing when Hardy would be ready to play again.
The Ospreys coach hopes Hardy can return at the beginning of next season, with the World Cup due to start in October 2027. That remains an aspiration rather than a confirmed comeback date. Jones said the recovery would depend on rehabilitation proceeding without setbacks and stressed that Hardy would have to progress at the pace his body allowed.
The injury also removes an established Wales option at scrum-half. Hardy has regularly provided cover for Tomos Williams, according to BBC Sport. Ospreys team-mate Reuben Morgan-Williams and uncapped Dragons scrum-half Che Hope have also been included in Steve Tandy's squad for November's Nations Championship, as Wales prepare for their next international fixtures without Hardy.
Despite his involvement with the national side, Hardy has yet to make an appearance in a World Cup match. He joined Wales' squad during the 2023 tournament in France as injury cover but did not play. Recovering in time for the next edition would therefore give him another opportunity to pursue a first appearance on that stage.
Jones described the World Cup as a valuable goal during a long recovery and expressed confidence in Hardy's professionalism and commitment to rehabilitation. He said the player would continue working towards that target unless told it was unattainable. For now, the season-ending absence is confirmed; whether Hardy can return in time for Australia remains dependent on his recovery.
