Kieran Hardy needs knee surgery after Ospreys injury blow
Kieran Hardy is expected to be sidelined for months after suffering a knee injury in Ospreys' win at Dragons. His precise recovery timetable will remain unclear until after surgery.

Wales scrum-half Kieran Hardy requires knee surgery and is expected to spend months out of action after being injured in Ospreys' victory at Dragons, BBC Sport reported. The 30-year-old's absence is a setback for both his club and Wales, with the November internationals approaching and no firm return date yet available.

Watch the highlights:

Hardy started the 38-31 win on Friday night but was helped off during the first half in considerable discomfort. He underwent scans afterwards. Ospreys transition coach Richard Kelly confirmed on Tuesday that the injury was serious enough to require an operation, with the anticipated recovery period measured in months rather than weeks.

Kelly said a more precise assessment would have to wait until after the procedure, when the club could discuss the outcome with the surgeon. He described Hardy as disappointed after receiving confirmation that surgery was necessary. Kelly also praised the scrum-half's performances over the previous season and the start of the current campaign, saying the club hoped rehabilitation would allow him to regain that form.

The injury interrupts a period in which Hardy had established an important role for club and country. BBC Sport described him as a standout performer for Ospreys during the 2025-26 United Rugby Championship season. The former Scarlets player has 32 Wales caps and had been expected to retain his place in Steve Tandy's squad for the upcoming Tests.

Tomos Williams was Wales' first-choice scrum-half during the 2026 Six Nations, with Hardy serving as his principal backup. Hardy made the matchday squad for all five fixtures and replaced Williams in three of those matches. He had also been expected to be involved when Wales face Japan in Cardiff on Saturday, 7 November, before the knee injury disrupted those plans.

BBC Sport reported that Hardy would miss the autumn internationals and was a serious doubt for next year's Six Nations. That assessment does not amount to a confirmed absence from the later tournament: Kelly's update left the exact recovery timetable unresolved. The next medical assessment after surgery will provide the basis for a clearer picture of his rehabilitation and eventual return.
