Kess Elmore makes Northern Ireland debut after five-year wait for call-up
Kess Elmore made her senior Northern Ireland debut in the 4-0 World Cup qualifying play-off defeat by Portugal, five years after her previous involvement in a national-team training camp. BBC Sport reported that the 27-year-old had believed her opportunity to represent Northern Ireland might have passed before receiving the call for the two-legged tie.
Elmore entered at half-time at Inver Park in Larne, with Portugal already holding a commanding advantage following their first-half performance. Northern Ireland improved after the interval, and the debutant offered additional movement and energy in attack. Her first appearance came against a Portuguese side ranked 22nd in the world, as the hosts were left with a four-goal deficit in the tie.
The call-up followed a long gap in her involvement with Northern Ireland. Elmore had taken part in a training camp in 2021 but had not received an official call-up since. She told BBC Sport that being contacted by manager Michael McArdle had surprised her, even though the possibility of an international return had remained in her thoughts.
Her debut also required a change from her usual club duties. Elmore generally plays on the wing or in midfield for Sparta Prague, but spent much of her first Northern Ireland appearance operating as a lone striker. She said she had not played at centre-forward for a long time, dating back to university, while stressing her willingness to fill whichever attacking position the team needed.
Elmore pointed to her experience across different teams, formations and tactical approaches as something she could contribute to a young squad. According to BBC Sport, she has also played in the Champions League and Europa League this year. She said those experiences had strengthened her understanding of the game and her confidence in the qualities she could bring to international football.
McArdle welcomed the energy Elmore supplied on her debut and said she could give Northern Ireland another option in the final third. The squad now travels to Portimao for Tuesday's second leg. Portugal's substantial advantage leaves Northern Ireland facing a difficult task, but Elmore's introduction has given the manager an additional attacking option as the tie continues.
