Kent Reach 299-6 as Crawley and Northeast Lead Day-One Batting
Kent reached 299-6 against Middlesex after Zak Crawley and Sam Northeast made eighties on a rain-shortened opening day of their County Championship Division Two match at Merchant Taylors' School. The ECB Reporters' Network, carried by BBC Sport, reported that Middlesex had yet to bat when play ended.
Watch the highlights:
Crawley scored 81, his first Championship half-century of the season, while Northeast made 87. Their second-wicket partnership added 142 after Ben Compton was trapped lbw by Tom Helm for 13 in the 10th over. Crawley was the more aggressive of the pair but was selective outside off stump during the stand.
The England opener struck eight fours on his way to 50 before increasing the pace after lunch. His innings ended when he drove at a wide delivery from Ryan Higgins and was caught at slip. Higgins was returning to action after two months out with a wrist injury. Crawley's previous highest Championship score for Kent this summer had been 44.
Middlesex fought back after breaking the Crawley-Northeast partnership. Toby Roland-Jones finished the day with 3-70, while Helm claimed 2-57. Tawanda Muyeye edged Roland-Jones to Sam Robson at slip for 13, and Daniel Bell-Drummond was caught by wicketkeeper Joe Cracknell off the same bowler for eight.
Northeast continued to accumulate runs through that spell and reached his half-century with his fifth boundary. He had scored 335 and 122 in his previous two seasons against Middlesex while representing Glamorgan. His latest innings ended shortly after a rain delay during tea, when Roland-Jones dismissed him lbw for 87.
Helm then bowled Chris Benjamin for 27. Ekansh Singh survived a chance when Higgins dropped him at gully before rain stopped play again, with the players returning about 45 minutes later. Kent moved close to securing a second batting bonus point before stumps; the recorded bonus-point tally at the close was two for Middlesex and one for Kent.
