Kent secure promotion as Middlesex end Northamptonshire's hopes at Lord's

Kent secured promotion to the County Championship's top division after Middlesex beat Northamptonshire by seven wickets at Lord's, ending the visitors' remaining hopes of going up. Northamptonshire will finish third in Division Two, according to BBC Sport's match report, supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network. Middlesex completed their campaign with 20 points from the match, while Northamptonshire took three.

Chasing 134 on the third day, Middlesex recovered from 12-2 through a century partnership between stand-in captain Max Holden and Ben Geddes. Holden made 50 and Geddes finished unbeaten on 59 as the hosts reached 134-3. Their stand settled a pursuit that Harry Conway had briefly made uncomfortable by dismissing both opening batters in successive overs.

Earlier, Saif Zaib had kept Northamptonshire in contention with 110, his third red-ball century of the season. The visitors were dismissed for 285 in their second innings after making 103 in their first, compared with Middlesex's first-innings 255. Tom Helm finished with second-innings figures of 4-62, while Zafar Gohar took 3-57. Zaib's resistance ensured Middlesex still had a target to chase despite their substantial first-innings advantage.

Northamptonshire lost two of their last three wickets within the day's opening three overs. Helm had Ben Sanderson caught behind and Toby Roland-Jones trapped Conway lbw, but Zaib survived two dropped catches in the deep. He struck Roland-Jones for two sixes and reached his hundred, with last man Yuzvendra Chahal helping extend the innings. Zaib eventually top-edged a pull off Helm to wicketkeeper Harry Duke.

Conway then removed Nathan Fernandes, caught at second slip, and Sam Robson, given out caught behind, to put early pressure on Middlesex. Holden responded with consecutive boundaries against Sanderson. Geddes also benefited from a missed chance when, on 13, he was dropped by Gus Miller at mid-wicket off Conway. The pair otherwise progressed steadily, taking Middlesex beyond the danger created by those opening wickets.

Holden attacked Calvin Harrison with sweeps and reverse-sweeps, while Geddes hit Chahal for six to bring up the century stand. Holden fell in the following over after misjudging a slog sweep, but Geddes completed his second half-century of the match and finished the chase with a boundary followed by two runs off Chahal. The result settled Northamptonshire's promotion challenge in Kent's favour.
