Kent seal Division One return after eight wins in 11 matches

Kent have secured promotion to Division One of the County Championship, completing a recovery from finishing bottom of the second tier last season. BBC Sport reported that their return was confirmed on Saturday when Northamptonshire lost to Middlesex. Kent then completed a three-day victory over Gloucestershire, ending the campaign as runners-up to Durham and securing top-flight cricket for 2027.

The promotion ends a two-season stay in Division Two. Head coach Adam Hollioake took over following Kent's relegation in 2024, but his first campaign brought only two victories from 14 Championship matches. The early stages of 2026 offered little immediate improvement: Kent opened with two draws and then suffered an innings defeat against Worcestershire. They responded by winning eight of their remaining 11 matches.

Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, Hollioake credited the players for implementing the team's plans and recovering from that difficult opening. He said both he and the squad had questioned themselves after the first three matches, following the disappointment of the previous year. Although he had become more confident as the campaign progressed, confirmation of promotion brought relief after a prolonged effort to turn results around.

Kent's batting returns included four players reaching at least 700 Championship runs during the season. Sam Northeast led the group with 890. In the bowling attack, Matt Milnes finished with 54 wickets and Keith Dudgeon took 42, making the two seamers the county's leading wicket-takers. Those contributions accompanied the run of victories that lifted Kent from their winless opening to a promotion place.

Hollioake distinguished between setting out instructions as a coach and delivering them in matches, giving the players credit for the latter. He also highlighted their response to setbacks as a central reason for the improvement. The final victory over Gloucestershire followed the result elsewhere that had already settled Kent's promotion, allowing them to complete the campaign with another win.

The coach nevertheless stressed that further progress would be needed in Division One. While welcoming the achievement, he noted that finishing second in Division Two still placed Kent 12th among the 18 first-class counties. Hollioake said the club would enjoy its success while continuing to improve for the higher division.
