Kent Defeat Worcestershire by 84 Runs to Strengthen Promotion Bid

Kent strengthened their County Championship promotion challenge with an 84-run victory over Worcestershire on the fourth day at Canterbury. BBC Sport, carrying an ECB Reporters' Network account, reported that Kent collected 19 points from the match while Worcestershire took three, leaving the winners 15 points clear of third-placed Northamptonshire with three fixtures remaining.

Worcestershire began the final day on 84-3 and faced a target of 380. Brett D'Oliveira and Adam Hose gave the visitors an encouraging start before Hasan Mahmud trapped Hose leg before wicket for 38. Henry Cullen then joined D'Oliveira, and their stand carried Worcestershire to 199-4 by lunch as the chase remained alive.

Hasan changed ends after lunch and bowled Cullen for 45, ending an 86-run partnership. Matthew Waite helped D'Oliveira rebuild once more, and the Worcestershire captain reached his century by driving Keith Dudgeon for two. The visitors advanced to 265-5 and appeared capable of extending the contest deep into the final session.

The match turned when Waite chopped a delivery from Dudgeon onto his stumps for 37. Dudgeon then trapped Tom Taylor leg before wicket with the final ball before tea and bowled Beyers Swanepoel for a golden duck with the first delivery after the interval. His three wickets came in a span of 19 balls and broke Worcestershire's resistance.

Hasan used the new ball to dismiss Ben Allison leg before wicket without scoring. Matt Milnes completed the victory when Adam Finch, on seven, was caught by Tawanda Muyeye at second slip. Worcestershire's last five wickets fell for 30 runs, and D'Oliveira was left unbeaten on 103 after anchoring the chase.

Kent had made 238 in their first innings and 358 in their second, with Sam Northeast scoring 132 in the latter. Worcestershire replied with 217 before their unsuccessful fourth-innings pursuit. Hasan and Milnes each took three wickets in the final innings, while the result gave Kent valuable separation from their nearest promotion rival as the Division Two season entered its final three rounds.
