Lachlan Kennedy has ended his wait for a national championship crown, clocking 9.96 seconds to win his first Australian 100m title at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday night.

The Queenslander had seen fireworks erupt from the nearby Royal Easter Show just before the men's 100m final, with the timing adding to an already electric atmosphere. Kennedy, though, was producing his own pyrotechnics on the track, surging across the line a comfortable 0.2 seconds ahead of Josh Azzopardi in second place.

The winning margin might seem commanding in sprinting terms, but Kennedy himself acknowledged he was not at his sharpest from the blocks. His first few steps drew concern heading into the race, yet his ability to find rhythm mid-race proved decisive as he drew away from the field.

The 22-year-old revealed his motivation went beyond mere winning. "I needed the win, I needed to be national champ. I needed to say I had it," he said. "It's a big relief to be able to finally do it in front of an awesome crowd and against great competitors."

Kennedy had spent 12 months reflecting on his defeat to Rohan Browning at last year's national championships, losing by less than 0.1 seconds in a heartbreaking finish. This time around, the roles were reversed, with Browning crossing third on Saturday.

The victory also came with the pressure of replicating his personal best, set in Friday's heat. Concerns had emerged after Kennedy managed only 10.05 seconds in his semi-final, raising questions about his form heading into the final. Those doubts were dismissed emphatically under the lights of Sydney Olympic Park.

The national record of 9.93 seconds now beckons, and Kennedy has made clear his ambitions lie in breaking that barrier before the season is out. With his first national title secured and his confidence soaring, the Queenslander appears poised to take the next step in his already impressive career.
