Kelsy scores twice as Rangers beat St Johnstone 4-0 at Ibrox
Rangers beat St Johnstone 4-0 at Ibrox on Saturday, with Kevin Kelsy scoring twice as Derek McInnes's team responded to the points they dropped at Dundee a week earlier. The Guardian reported that Ryan Naderi and substitute Tochi Chukwuani also scored in a Scottish Premiership victory that included three second-half goals for the hosts.
Watch the highlights:
Kelsy opened the scoring in the 29th minute, giving Rangers a narrow half-time lead despite their control of the opening period. St Johnstone improved immediately after the restart, but Naderi struck in the 61st minute and Kelsy added his second five minutes later to put the home side firmly in command.
The visitors then lost substitute Kai Fotheringham to a straight red card in the 74th minute. Referee Chris Graham dismissed him for a high challenge on Nico Raskin, according to the Guardian's report. Chukwuani completed the scoring with three minutes remaining, turning a one-goal interval advantage into a decisive result.
BBC Sport's match statistics showed the scale of Rangers' attacking output: 21 shots, nine of them on target, and eight big chances compared with two for St Johnstone. The expected-goals figures were 4.57 for Rangers and 0.58 for the visitors. Those numbers reflected a performance in which the hosts generated considerably more opportunities than their opponents.
The BBC also reported that Rangers won 13 corners and scored their first goal from one this season. Emmanuel Fernandez supplied the flick-on for Kelsy's second goal. That breakthrough added a set-piece contribution to an afternoon on which both strikers found the net, giving McInnes another positive alongside the final score.
McInnes told the BBC he was encouraged by the performance ahead of Wednesday's league visit to Hearts. The trip will be his first return to Tynecastle since leaving Hearts for Rangers in the summer. He pointed to his former club's strong home record and said Rangers would need a substantial performance to secure a result, while expressing confidence in his own team's improving form.
