Kartal announces Fenerbahce resignation as club president insists he stays

Ismail Kartal announced his resignation as Fenerbahce head coach after a 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma, only for club president Aziz Yildirim to reject the decision. BBC Sport reported that the coach made his announcement at the post-match news conference, leaving conflicting public accounts of who would lead the Turkish side.

Kartal, 65, had returned in June 2026 for his fourth spell in charge. He told reporters he was stepping aside to help the club, its players and future coaches, and said he did not intend to return. He also acknowledged the work of his players and president during his three months back at Fenerbahce, describing the preparation period positively before announcing his decision.

Yildirim responded through a statement on the club's website, reported by the BBC, insisting that Kartal remained head coach and asking supporters to back him. The president said he had spoken to Kartal after the news conference. According to Yildirim's account, the coach identified the pressure associated with the job and an incident in which a bottle thrown from the stands struck him during the match as factors behind his announcement.

Fenerbahce said in a social-media post that a spectator involved in the bottle incident had been identified and banned from the stadium. Yildirim also criticised supporters and the media over their treatment of Kartal, saying persistent criticism had created pressure. His public refusal to accept the resignation contrasted directly with the coach's stated intention to leave; the BBC report did not establish an agreed resolution between them.

The announcement followed Fenerbahce's first Champions League match on their return to the competition after an 18-year absence. Archie Brown scored the equaliser in the 48th minute after Bryan Cristante had put Roma ahead before half-time. Brown appeared surprised when told about Kartal's decision in a post-match interview, saying he had not known about the announcement. Domestically, Fenerbahce were ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after two victories and two defeats.

Kartal's connection with Fenerbahce extends beyond his coaching spells. He made more than 250 appearances for the club as a player, winning two league titles among six trophies. He later served four years as an assistant coach and won the Turkish Super Cup during his first managerial spell in 2014.
