Karolina Muchova routs Katie Boulter in 58-minute US Open victory

Karolina Muchova swept past British number one Katie Boulter 6-1, 6-0 in just 58 minutes to reach the third round of the US Open. BBC Sport reported that the Czech seventh seed controlled the second-round contest from the outset, leaving Boulter with only one game in a decisive defeat at Flushing Meadows.

The match had originally been scheduled for an outer court but was transferred to the 14,000-capacity Louis Armstrong Stadium after heavy rain disrupted play in New York. Boulter said afterward that she had struggled with the conditions under the roof, the noise and other distractions, describing the performance as a bad day and acknowledging that she needed to handle those circumstances better.

Boulter’s serving numbers reflected the difficulty she faced throughout the contest. The 30-year-old struck eight double faults without recording an ace and won only 33 percent of the points played behind her first serve. She was unable to save any of the seven break points she faced, while her 22 unforced errors far outweighed her four winners.

Muchova produced the cleaner and more effective display. The Wimbledon runner-up finished with 14 winners and nine unforced errors, using drop shots and forceful groundstrokes to keep Boulter under sustained pressure. The scoreline sent Muchova safely into round three and ended Boulter’s campaign in the second round.

The loss continued a difficult Grand Slam season for Boulter, who is ranked 62nd in the world. According to BBC Sport, she has recorded two match wins across the four major tournaments in 2026. Since exiting Wimbledon in the first round, she has won two of the six matches she has played.

There were mixed results elsewhere for the British contingent. Francesca Jones completed a rain-delayed 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 first-round win over Poland’s Magda Linette and was due to return for her second-round match on Thursday. Jacob Fearnley lost 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, while Jan Choinski was beaten 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) by Botic van de Zandschulp in another delayed first-round match.
